In the spring of 1999, Trustee Emeritus Cyrus H. Holley established Bloomfield College’s first endowed professorship as part of a generous donation to the Campaign for Bloomfield College. The professorship is used to foster teaching and scholarly creativity within the philosophy program and the College as a whole, with a particular emphasis on applied ethics.
The first recipient of the professorship is Professor of Philosophy Richard E. Hart. As the Holley Professor, Dr. Hart arranges visits with outside speakers and conducts workshops for the college community. Topics to date include “Capitalism and Human Values,” a debate which featured faculty members Guillermo Jimenez and Ian Marshall, and a two-part discussion on “Plato’s Dialogue and Human Values.”
Cyrus Holley was executive vice president/chief operating officer of Engelhard Corporation before retiring in 1992. Mr. Holley serves as president and chief executive officer of Oakmont Enterprises, Inc. a business investment and venture capital firm, and as president and sole owner of Management Consulting Services, which specializes in business and education partnerships. Mr. Holley served as a member of the Bloomfield College Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1997, and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Bloomfield College in 1998.
