Careers for Science Majors
Bloomfield College biology, chemistry,
and biochemistry graduates
have gone on to medical, dental,
chiropractic, pharmacy, law, and
graduate schools. Graduates are
employed in pharmaceutical
companies, environmental testing
laboratories, the polymer industry,
and food and fragrance companies,
to name just a few. Others have

Biology majors select one of the
following concentrations:
General Biology
Biology is the study of living things, from
their smallest sub-cellular structures to complex
interactions of organisms in ecosystems.
The General Biology concentration includes
a broad range of biology courses along with
supporting courses in chemistry, physics, and
mathematics. Today’s biologists take on
challenges ranging from understanding and
treating diseases to preserving our natural
resources. They pursue careers in research,
industry, government, and education.
Environmental Studies
Environmental Studies is concerned with
the cause-and-effect relationships underlying

Chemistry majors select one of the
following concentrations:
General Chemistry
Chemistry has been described as the "central
science." Because an understanding of
chemistry is essential to virtually every field of
science, technology, and medicine, chemists
enjoy a very broad range of careers and
employment options. Students choosing the
General Chemistry concentration receive a
thorough grounding in general, organic,
inorganic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry
as well as in supporting areas of mathematics
and physics. Small classes, individual
attention, and extensive hands-on experience
with modern laboratory techniques and
instrumentation help students realize their
potential and focus their career goals.
Biochemistry
This is a perfect major for students with
strong interests in both chemistry and
biology. The Biochemistry concentration
combines biology and chemistry courses
that effectively complement one another.
Together, these courses and their extensive
hands-on laboratory experiences provide
strong preparation for graduate or professional
school and/or employment in this
increasingly important field.
Minor in Biology or Chemistry
Students wishing to add to their undergraduate
degree can also obtain a minor in
biology or chemistry. |

Bloomfield College and UMDNJ
Bloomfield College has a close relationship with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Health Related Professions (UMDNJ-SHRP). Our affiliation ensures preferred seating in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Allied Health Technologies programs at UMDNJ-SHRP for Bloomfield College students who have completed 96 credits, and have the required prerequisites and grade point average. Completion of both the Bloomfield College and UMDNJ-SHRP requirements (approximately fifteen additional months of study) will result in a joint degree in either the area of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (BS-CLS) or Allied Health Technologies (BS-AHT). |
Clinical Laboratory Sciences provide an exciting career path for students interested in employment in a hospital or industrial laboratory environment. The programs prepare highly trained professionals, immediately ready to enter the workforce.
CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES
BS—Clinical Laboratory Sciences
degree option is for students interested in laboratory work. There are three tracks to choose from:
- Medical Laboratory Science
Medical Laboratory Scientists perform tests on body fluids and tissues, thus providing doctors with data that are
critical for the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease.
- Cytotechnology
Cytotechnologists spend extensive time using
microscopes to examine cells removed from tissues and organs. They work closely with pathologists to detect and identify abnormalities.
