In addition to the courses listed below, which are the requirements for the major, students are also responsible for general education courses which are found on pages 57-61.

For English majors, MTH 110 can satisfy the Mathematics requirement.

Many courses have prerequisites which are listed in the course descriptions. Please be sure that necessary prerequisites have been taken before enrolling in any course.

Students wishing to be eligible for a New Jersey Teaching Certificate must be admitted into the B.A. in Education and satisfy the courses listed in the English co-concentration (see pages 141-142). Should a student decide to major in the discipline exclusively, he/she will need to submit a change of major declaration and satisfy all the requirement listed below. Students who wish to double major must complete the requirements of both majors.

Students interested in English as a major have three options: literature, communications or writing.

Literature Concentration

The courses required for the literature concentration are:

  • ENG 125 Introduction to Literature: World Literature
    or ENG 150 Introduction to Literature: Western Literature

  • ENG 203 History of English Literature I

  • ENG 204 History of English Literature II

  • ENG 278 American Literature Survey I: Major American Writers

  • ENG 279 American Literature Survey II: Modern American Authors

  • ENG 401 A British or American Author in Depth
    or ENG 402 Literary Criticism and Advanced Research

  • One Shakespeare Course

And one course selected from the following:

  • ENG 222 African American Literature

  • ENG 223 Women in Literature

  • ENG 226 Literature of Race, Class and Gender

  • ENG 351 Major African and Asian Writers

  • ENG 356 Major Latin American and Caribbean Writers

And five Literature course units (recommended)
selected from the following:

  • ENG 216 The Short Story  (0.5 c.u.)

  • ENG 217 The Lyric  (0.5 c.u.)

  • ENG 222 African/American Literature

  • ENG 223 Women in Literature

  • ENG 251 The Art of Fiction

  • ENG 252 The Art of Drama

  • ENG 253 The Art of Poetry

In addition, students will select from two specialized tracts, Interpersonal Communication or Broadcast Journalism to
complete the major.

Interpersonal Communication:

Students will select four course units from the following group:

  • ENG 212 Voice and Speech Production

  • ENG 213 Oral Interpretation of LIterature

  • ENG 262 Small Group Communication

  • ENG 265 Organizational Communication

  • ENG 301 Interpersonal Communication

  • ENG 310 Intercultural Communication

Broadcast Journalism:

Students will select four course units from the following group:

  • ENG 212 Voice and Speech Production

  • ENG 214 Interviewing

  • ENG 221 Writing for Radio and Television

  • ENG 286 Digital Audio

  • ENG 290 Video Production I

  • ENG 310 Intercultural Communication

  • ENG 357 Broadcast Journalism

Writing Concentration

The courses required for the writing concentration are:

  • ENG 204 History of English Literature II

  • Two Pre-20th-Century Literature Courses

  and

  • Two literature courses (Add one course in genre study- Art of Fiction, Art of Poetry or Art of Drama)

And five course units in writing selected from the following:

  • ENG 213 Oral Interpretation of Literature

  • ENG 215 Playwrighting

  • ENG 216 The Short Story  (0.5 c.u.)

  • ENG 217 The Lyric  (0.5 c.u.)

  • ENG 230 Journalism I

  • ENG 241 Journalism II

  • ENG 242 Desktop Publishing

  • ENG 246 Intermediate Creative Writing

  • ENG 309 Advanced Fiction Writing

  • ENG 342 Writing for the Professions

  • ENG 349 Advanced Poetry Writing

Minor in English

A minor in English must successfully complete 6 course units:

  • ENG 203 The History of English Literature I

  • ENG 204 The History of English Literature II

  • ENG Elective

  • ENG Elective

  • ENG Literature (300 level or above)

  • ENG Literature (300 level or above)

These courses should be selected with the advice of the English faculty.

Students should consult with their major advisor and a member of the English faculty prior to declaring the English minor.

Minor in Creative Writing

A minor in Creative Writing must take the following courses:

  • ENG 120 Introduction to Creative Writing

  • ENG 220 Intermediate Creative Writing

  • ENG 460 Senior Thesis in Creative Writing

And two writing courses selected from the following:

  • ENG 215 Playwriting

  • ENG 216 The Short Story  (0.5 c.u.)
