In addition to the courses listed below, which are the requirements for the major, students are also responsible for general education courses which are found on pages 57-61.

For Political Science majors, the two Social Science requirements are included in the major. MTH 110 can satisfy the Mathematics requirement.

Many courses have prerequisites which are listed in the course descriptions. Please be sure that necessary prerequisites have been taken before enrolling in any course.

Students wishing to be eligible for a New Jersey Teaching Certificate must be admitted into the B.A. in Education and satisfy the courses listed in the Political Science co-concentration (see page 153). Should a student decide to major in the discipline exclusively, he/she will need to submit a change of major declaration and satisfy all the requirement listed below. Students who wish to double major must complete the requirements of both majors.

A student wishing to major in political science may choose either the general, public policy or the public administration concentration. The core courses required of all majors consist of the following three (3) courses:

  • PSC 100 Introduction to Political Science

  • PSC 200 American Politics

  • PSC 244 State and Local Government

General Political Science Concentration

In addition to the common core courses, a student in the general political science concentration will take the following five (5) required courses:

  • PSC 203 Comparative Political Systems

  • PSC 204 Introduction to Political Thought

  • PSC 205 Modern Political Ideologies

  • PSC 224 American Foreign Policy

  • SOC 325 The Logic of Social Inquiry

In addition to the common core and required courses, a student will take six additional courses in political science in related disciplines chosen in conjunction with an advisor.

At least two of these courses must be at the 300 level.

Public Policy Concentration

In addition to the common core courses, a student in the public policy concentration will take the following eight (8) required courses:

  • PSC 203 Comparative Political Systems

  • PSC 204 Introduction to Political Thought

  • PSC 205 Modern Political Ideologies

  • PSC 224 American Foreign Policy

  • SOC 325 The Logic of Social Inquiry

  • PSC 223 Problems in Public Policy

  • PSC 242 Science and Public Policy

  • PSC 310 Public Administration

Public Administration Concentration

In addition to the common core courses, a student in the public administration concentration will take the following five (5) required courses:

  • PSC 223 Problems in Public Policy

  • PSC 310 Public Administration

  • PSC 311 Public Economics and Finance

  • PSY 317 Organizational Behavior

  • PSY 245 Statistics for Behavioral Sciences

In addition to the common core and required courses, a student will take six additional courses in political science in related disciplines chosen in conjunction with an advisor.

Group I-Any three courses from the following:

  • PSC 334 American Constitutional Law: I

  • PSC 335 American Constitutional Law: II

  • PSC 204 Introduction to Political Thought

  • PSC 230 American Political Thought

Group II-Any three courses from the following:

  • PSC 235 Gay and Lesbian Politics

  • SOC 235 Urban Sociology

  • SOC 314 Minority Groups and Race Relations

  • HIS 252 History of US Women I

  • HIS 253 History of US Women II

  • HIS 208 African/American History Since 1877

Minor in Public Policy

A minor in public policy must successfully complete eight courses:

  • PSC 223 Problems in Public Policy

  • PSC 224 American Foreign Policy

  • PSC 242 Science and Public Policy

  • PSC 244 Local and State Government

  • PSC 310 Public Administration

Plus three courses chosen in conjunction with a political science advisor.
