What options are available to finance my education?

There are numerous options available for financing your education:

A. Apply for and receive financial aid (i.e. grants, loans);

The ability to pay college expenses is measured by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA. This application considers such things as family income and assets, family size, need, unusual expenses, and student savings. You'll also need to submit last year's income tax statement.

In spite of all you've heard about financial aid tightening up, over 75 percent of our students are receiving some kind of aid, most of it obtained through our Financial Aid Office.

Forms of Financial Aid

There are three types of financial aid:

(1) scholarships, based on merit, that do not have to be repaid; (2) grants, that do not have to be repaid, (3) loans, which are usually subsidized by the federal government and DO have to be repaid.

In many cases, your "financial aid package" will involve one or more of these 3 types of aid.

Steps to take:

1. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1 of the year you will be attending.

To be considered for any federal, state or University scholarships administered by Bloomfield College, students must fill out the (FAFSA). This free form is used to determine your eligibility for all financial aid programs. Remember you may also need an income tax return for the previous year, so plan ahead. The FAFSA can be filed on-line @ http://www.fafsa.ed.gov, or a hardcopy can be obtained at Bloomfield College Financial Aid Office.

2. When you receive the Student Aid Report (SAR) back from the federal processing center, review it for accuracy and make corrections.

It will take about 4 - 6 weeks to get the SAR. Remember that accuracy is important because the information you report will be sent by the federal processor to the colleges you listed on the FAFSA. Colleges use this information in awarding financial aid to students. In addition, some states, including New Jersey, receive information from the Federal processor to determine eligibility for state

As you can see, there are many options in the area of financial aid. It can be confusing.
