1. What does it mean to have a co-concentration for the BA in education?

The co-concentration provides the student with the liberal arts background to support your teaching effectiveness and to satisfy state certification requirements.

2. What subject areas can I major in for the Secondary Education program?

Secondary education students can have a subject area specialty in: Biology, Chemistry(Physical Science), English, Fine Arts, History or Mathematics.

3. How do I qualify for the P_3 accelerated program?

To qualify, you must hold a New Jersey teaching certificate or be employed as a P-3 teacher with a certificate of eligibility.

4. How many courses are required to complete the post-baccalaureate program?

Secondary education students must take 7 courses plus Student Teaching and the Student Teaching Seminar. Elementary education students must take 8 courses plus
the Student Teaching components.

5. When should I take the Praxis test?

It is strongly recommended that you take the Praxis after the junior year or if you are a Post Baccalaureate student, after your first education course.

6. How do I prepare for the Praxis test?

Bloomfield College offers Praxis Review courses for students. For information regarding these courses, you should contact The Center for Academic Development. With the state contemplating raising the passing scores, these review classes will be most helpful in maximizing your performance. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) also publishes several booklets which are helpful for Praxis preparation.

7. Is Student Teaching a full time commitment?

Teacher education students must spend one semester student teaching, full time, in order to meet state certification requirements.

8. Where can I do my Student Teaching?

You can do your student teaching in any public or parochial school in the state which agrees to assume this responsibility. Placements are arranged through the Office of Teacher Education.

9. What are the pre-requisites for Student Teaching?

You must have successfully completed all of the course work in your respective program with a minimum 2.75 GPA , and have passed the Praxis test before you can Student Teach.

10. Can I complete my course work and Student Teach at the same time?

All course work must be completed first.

11. What requirements must I meet to be eligible for state certification?

In order to be eligible for state certification, you must complete an approved college teacher education program with a GPA of at least 2.75 and pass the appropriate Praxis test.

12. How do I apply for state certification?

Once you have completed your program and successfully completed Student Teaching, the Office of Teacher Education will process your certification application for you.

13. Do I qualify for both elementary and P-3 certification through the BA
program?

Yes, since the BA program in education requires students to take P-3 courses necessary for certification

14. Does Bloomfield College offer an Alternate Route to certification option?

Bloomfield College does not participate in the Alternate Route Program
