LEVEL 1 (CAE 101) BASIC SPEAKING

Students who enter at this level do not speak English at all.  They learn to speak, read, and write basic communication items.  This includes vocabulary needed for greeting, family roles, shopping, getting around on public transportation, and going to medical offices.

LEVEL 2 (CAE 102) LOW BEGINNING ENGLISH SKILLS

Students can speak some English with difficulty.  They expand their vocabulary and communication skills through stories, a grammar workbook, and conversation about their lives.  When they leave this level, they will be able to use the present and present continuous tenses in speaking and writing.

LEVEL 3 (CAE 104) HIGH BEGINNING ENGLISH SKILLS

Students can speak English relatively well, but they do not read or write the language.  The emphasis is on using oral skills to gain English literacy skills.  Upon exiting this class, students will be able to use subject and object pronouns correctly.

LEVEL 4 (CAE 201) LOW INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH SKILLS

Students can express themselves relatively well enough to meet their daily needs, but they make frequent errors in grammar and vocabulary.  At this level, students expand their vocabulary and learn how to use the past and future verb tenses correctly.

LEVEL 5 (CAE 202) INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH SKILLS

Students can use English in speaking, reading and writing, but they still make errors in expressions of time.  They review correct usage of present, past and future verb tenses while continuing to expand their vocabulary and writing skills through higher-level materials.

LEVEL 6 (CAE 203) HIGH INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH SKILLS

Students use English well, but they become confused when they need to use more sophisticated language structures, such as the past progressive and perfect tenses.  They work on those as well as on correct use of adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, and infinitives.

LEVEL 7 (CAE 301/302) ADVANCED ENGLISH SKILLS

Students at this level write relatively well. The emphasis at this level is speaking/listening. Advanced-level students who want to continue to perfect their language may do so through various media.  The topic of these classes varies each term, as students and instructor try to choose the materials that best suit each specific class.  Learners can re-enroll in these classes as many times as they want.  They are encouraged to continue their education at Bloomfield College or other institutions.
