Using the Office Assistant

1.      On the Help menu, click Microsoft Word Help.

2.      A balloon will appear  - “What would you like to do?”

3.      Type your question in the box provided.  Example:  How do I print? 

4.      Click Search.

Creating a New Blank Document

1.      On the File menu, click New.

2.      Click the General tab, and then double-click the Blank Document icon.

Or

3.      Click the New Blank Document icon on the Standard toolbar.

Open an Existing File

1.      On the File menu, select Open.

2.      On the Look In:  dropdown menu, choose which Folder or Drive you would like to view.

3.      Select Document and click Open.  

 
 

Saving a Document

1.      On the File menu, click Save As

2.      Name your document.

3.      Save as type should be Word Document.

4.      Choose what Folder or Drive you would like to save your document to.

5.      Click Save.

6.      Once a document is saved, you can click the Save icon on the Standard toolbar to resave at anytime.

 

Saving to your Network Folder

When you are ready to save your work, click on the File menu in the upper left corner of your screen.  From the drop down menu, click on Save As.  This will open a box where you can choose where to save the item.  At the top is a drop down menu.

From here you click on the arrow next to the “Save in” window.  A drop down list opens.


§         If you are logged in you will see your Network Drive listed.  In the above picture you see FMORGART on “VENUS\APPS\… that is this user’s Network Drive. 

§         Select your network drive by clicking on your name, which should then appear in the “Save in” window above.  (If your network directory does not appear in the save in window, you are not saving to your network drive.)

§         Next, click the Save button and your item will save to your Network Drive.  These files are now accessible from any computer on campus.

PLEASE NOTE:

§         Your user directory is limited to 30MB of storage.  Once you exceed this limit, you will need to delete files or move files to a diskette.

§         If you do not see your name or other network drives, (F: through Z: ), you may not be properly logged in.  If you are able to see other network drives but not your user directory, please report it to the Helpdesk at ext. 224 or stop in at the basement of One Park Place (entrance is on Liberty Street).

Setting Margins

1.      On the File menu, select Page Setup.

2.      Click on the Margins tab.

3.      Change margins to desired size and click OK.

Selecting Fonts

1.      On the Format menu, select Font.

 

2.      On the Font tab, select Font, Style and Size.

Or

3.      On the Formatting toolbar, from the dropdown menu select Font and Size. 

Line Spacing

1.      On the Format menu, choose Paragraph.

2.      Choose which line spacing you would like to use.

3.      Click OK.

1.      Use Keyboard Shortcuts below.

CTRL 1 for Single Space

CTRL 5 for 1.5 Space

Text Alignment

Left margin

1.      Select the text you want to align left.

2.      On the Formatting toolbar, click Align Left.

Center

1.      Select the text you want to align center.

2.      On the Formatting toolbar, click Align Center.

Right margin

1.      Select the text you want to align right.

2.      On the Formatting toolbar, click Align Right.

Justify

1.      Select the text you want to justify.

2.      On the Formatting toolbar, click Justify.

Cut, Copy and Paste text

1.      On the Edit menu, choose Cut to remove selected text.

      OR

2.      Choose Copy to copy selected text.

3.      On the Edit menu, select Paste to insert previously cut or copied text.

Using Spell Check 

1.      Click Spelling and Grammar on the Standard toolbar.

2.      When Word finds a possible spelling or grammatical error, make your changes in the Spelling and Grammar dialog box.

 

Printing

1.      On the File menu, select Print.

      Or

2.      On the Standard toolbar click the Print icon.
