BCSG prepares for primaries with candidates forum

Six members of the Bloomfield College Student Government Executive Council held a forum to educate their audience about the system of voting in the U.S. and each of the presidential candidates’ platforms concerning the issues. The forum was held in the Deacon’s Den on Thursday evening, January 31, 2008.

The forum presented the history of the two main parties, Democrat and Republican, and an explanation about the Electoral College process. The forum continued with the students giving a brief overview of the platforms for Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. The floor was opened for questions and the audience wanted to know about caucuses, the ideological difference between the two parties, and the job descriptions for positions such as speaker of the house, house majority leader, etc.

This lively, well-informed, and sometimes heated discussion centered on two issues: education and poverty. While the discussion tended to be "left of center" there was room for an open exchange of ideas and thoughts about the future of the country.

Dr. Lazaros Michailidis, professor of economics urged the students to be open-minded when researching the issues and ask the question "why not?" when thinking about political policy. He also suggested that they carefully consider the candidates who may not be very popular but have excellent ideas.
