2008-2009 Kellman course open for registrationMarch 6, 2008 - Bloomfield College is now accepting applications for the Kellman VIII course in Humanities for the fall of 2008. The Kellman course is an off-campus program held at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark, NJ, which provides free college-level classes to low-income adults. The course is a multidisciplinary approach which examines the theme "What is justice?" through philosophy, literature, and history. Kellman students are adults who, for whatever reason, could not attend college. They may have not had the money, went directly to work from high school, or chose to raise a family. For Kellman students, the course is a second chance to fulfill a dream and realize the possibilities of a higher education, social advancement, and personal fulfillment. Bloomfield College was selected in 2000 as one of five institutions across the country to offer this course which is modeled on the Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities. Other participating institutions include Reed College in Oregon, Trinity College in Connecticut, Northeaster University in Massachusetts, and the University of Alaska. The Kellman Course, named for a beloved Bloomfield College professor, Martin Kellman, is designed to give adults the opportunity for advanced education. Some graduates of the Kellman Course have continued their education and received baccalaureate degrees from area colleges and universities. The course is free and includes text books, bus passes if necessary, and all tuition. Credit awarded by the Kellman Course can be applied to a degree program at Bloomfield College. Classes meet at Bethany Baptist Church, 275 West Market Street, Newark, from September to May on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Interested students should contact Kathleen Ocasio at 973-748-9000 x309 or email her at kathleen_ocasio@bloomfield.edu for an application. Students will be interviewed for admission. |
