BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE RECEIVES $500,000 GRANT FROM THE KRESGE FOUNDATION

January 11, 2000, Bloomfield, NJ -- The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan recently awarded a $500,000 grant to Bloomfield College toward construction of the new library, which is nearing completion on the corner of Liberty Street and Oakland Avenue in Bloomfield.

This prestigious award comes with the challenge to raise the balance of the Campaign for Bloomfield College by December 31, 2000.

“I am grateful to the Trustees of The Kresge Foundation for their generous support,” said John F. Noonan, president of Bloomfield College. “We see the new library as the centerpiece of the transformation taking place on campus. Its digital and print collections and its sophisticated technologies will enrich the curriculum, the Bloomfield community, and the many communities where our students were born.”

The two-story brick building, which is expected to open in the late spring of 2000, will be the first new building on campus in 30 years. The new $7 million, 30,000-square-foot building will more than double the space of the existing library, Talbott Hall, which opened in 1955 to serve an enrollment of 200 students. Today, the College enrolls 2,000 students.

The library’s technology plan features a computer center, a distance learning facility, an electronic reference collection and ports for Internet access. A barrier-free link will provide access to the adjacent College Center.

“The Kresge grant underscores our own commitment to the new library,” said Bloomfield College Vice President for College Relations Linda C. Epps. “The Foundation’s participation confirms what we already know: Bloomfield College is blessed with Trustees, alumni, faculty, staff and friends who have a deep appreciation for its mission.”

The Kresge Foundation is an independent, private foundation created by the personal gifts of Sebastian S. Kresge. It is not affiliated with any corporation or organization. At the time of the December, 1999 grant announcements, the Foundation had awarded 203 grants in 1999 for a total of $110,058,333.

“In this cycle of grantmaking, our Trustees were pleased to support a range of organizations reflecting almost the entire breadth of the nonprofit sector. This diverse group is responding to the new challenges presented by their communities or sustaining activities that have demonstrated their effectiveness,” said John E. Marshall, III, President and CEO of The Kresge Foundation.

Bloomfield College is an independent, four-year, co-educational institution offering 2,000 full- and part-time students programs in the liberal arts and pre-professional studies. The College has earned a national reputation for its innovative academic and co-curricular programs and for its mission - to prepare students to function at the peak of their potential in a multiracial, multicultural society.
