HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR TO SPEAK AT BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE

March 14, 2000, Bloomfield, NJ -- As part of Bloomfield College’s “Understanding the Holocaust” course, survivor Irene Hizme will speak about her experiences on Monday, April 3 at 8 p.m. in Bloomfield College’s Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Ms. Hizme and her twin brother, Rene, were born in Czechoslovakia and were only four years old when they were taken with their mother to Theresienstadt. Shortly afterward, they were sent to Auschwitz, where they were separated. Irene never saw her mother again. Irene survived for almost three years in Auschwitz where she was experimented on by Josef Mengele - the infamous concentration camp doctor - as part of his twins research.

After the war, Irene was adopted by a family on Long Island and spent several years tracking down Rene, who was still in Europe. In 1950, the family was finally able to bring him to the United States and reunite the twins.

Bloomfield College’s Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre is located on the corner of Franklin and Fremont Streets in Bloomfield. The College is easily accessible from the Garden State Parkway, Exit 148 from the South and Exit 149 from the North.
