BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE WELCOMES
ADULT STUDENTS TO CAMPUS
|
September 8, 2000 -- As students converge on the Bloomfield
College campus this fall, many are adult learners who are pursuing a degree
while working full- or part-time.
Last weekend, the College held an orientation session for adult students. In the two-day session on Friday and Saturday, college faculty and administrators worked closely with new evening and weekend students to introduce them to the College’s academic programs, support services and student activities. On Saturday, students learned about test-taking strategies, note-taking skills, and coping with stress. Students also toured the new library on the corner of Liberty Street and Oakland Avenue. “Bloomfield College recognizes the demands made on working adults and has developed a complete college program for adult students that allows for serious academic pursuit within a schedule that provides balance in their lives,” said Carole Repak, director of the Center for Adult Learning at Bloomfield College. Mondays through Thursday evenings, the Center for Adult Learning offers more than 100 college courses taught by faculty who understand adults and adult learning. Classes meet from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Students can enroll in a part-time or full-time program. With personalized advising, students can earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in less than four years. “In addition to developing new courses and programs each year that address the needs of students, faculty and the global marketplace, Bloomfield College is one of the very few colleges in the state to offer a Chemistry program at night,” said Repak. For adults who prefer attending college on the weekends, the Center for Adult Learning offers Weekends at Bloomfield College. Students can complete their degree in just four years (11 trimesters) with summers off, by enrolling in the fall, winter and spring trimesters. Classes run 12 to 14 weeks per term. In the Weekend Program, students may earn a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certificate, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a concentration in criminal justice, or a B.A. in Pyschology with or without a concentration in Elementary Education. Students may also earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Computer Information Systems or Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration. In addition, the Center offers a Senior Citizens Reduced-Tuition Program, which enables senior citizens to enroll in regular, college-credit courses for only $15.00 a course, with a registration fee of $25.00. To provide additional services to adult students, Bloomfield College offers non-credit computer and personal development courses, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.
