BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL TEAM WINS CONFERENCE, ADVANCES TO REGIONALS

November 6, 2000 - The Bloomfield College women’s volleyball team finished the regular season with a perfect 14-0 conference record, but they didn’t stop there. The Lady Deacons (22-4 overall) captured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference crown last weekend by defeating Wilmington College in the tournament finals, 15-4, 15-9, 15-11, at Goldey Beacom College in Delaware.

The win avenged last year’s loss to Wilmington College in the tournament final, and propels Bloomfield College to the Regional Tournament at the University of Maine at Machias on Saturday, November 18.

Bloomfield College players Monica Fernandez, Eduarda Modaneze, and Cintia Spaniol were named to the All-Tournament Team as well as the All-Conference Team. Fernandez, an outside hitter and middle hitter from Colombia, was also named the conference’s Most Valuable Player. Head coach Tony Fontanelle, in just his first season at Bloomfield, was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.

He said he has been impressed by his team’s progress through the season.

“As the year went along, I realized that winning the conference and reaching the regionals was a possibility,” said Fontanelle. “I’m pleased that we’re now figuring out how to play as a team. I’d really like to see us gain our first bid to the nationals.”

While the nationals are not a sure bet for the Lady Deacons, Fontanelle likes his team’s chances. “The percentages are in our favor,” said Fontanelle. “I anticipate that one or two teams from our conference will be represented in the regionals, and the other teams will be on par with the teams from our conference, so we have a good shot.”
