BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE NURSING PROGRAM RECEIVES TOP RANKING

March 15, 2001 -- The Bloomfield College Presbyterian Division of Nursing is in some pretty elite company after the Class of 2000 received a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX licensing exam.

Of 483 baccalaureate programs nationwide, Bloomfield College was among the 18 that received a perfect pass rate and a top ranking according to information from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing for the test period April to September 2000.

“The Class of 2000 is the first class to complete the newly revised curriculum. The faculty worked closely with the students. We constantly asked for their feedback as they were progressing through the new curriculum. Sometimes they felt like the ‘experimental group,’” said Dr. Carolyn Tuella, Chairperson of the Bloomfield College Presbyterian Division of Nursing. “Their achievement is the result of faculty and students engaging in a collaborative educational process.

“A special spirit of unity was present with this class,” Tuella added. “They are to be congratulated for their success and the honor that they have bestowed on the nursing program and the College.”

During the past five years, the program has had an average pass rate of 89 percent.

“I didn’t have any doubt that everyone in our class would pass. Everybody worked hard,” said Vadim Kogan ’00, who is now employed as a Staff R.N. at Overlook Hospital. “It was a collective effort on the part of the faculty to prepare us.”

Kogan’s classmate, Annjennette Ra’oof, agrees.

“The one-on-one training that our instructors gave us really helped. In addition to our review sessions, they gave us a lot of extra help and encouragement,” said Ra’oof ’00, who now works in the O.R. at Union Hospital.

She says the unity of the class helped ensure her success. Rather than feeling competitive with each other, the classmates would help each other learn.

“We would get together in groups of three or four and quiz each other and help each other study,” she said. “We really bonded by the end of the program. We still call and keep in touch with each other.”

While achieving a 100 percent pass rate is a remarkable achievement, Ra’oof takes more pride in the fact that her knowledge and skills are first-rate.

“My supervisors are really pleased and ask me, ‘where did you learn to talk to patients like that?” said Ra’oof. “I told them ‘Bloomfield College.’”

Bloomfield College provides a baccalaureate degree nursing program for freshmen and transfer students. Registered nurses who are graduates of diploma and associate degree programs can apply for admission to the RN/BSN track. The RN/BSN program is offered on campus in Bloomfield and off-campus at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Last fall, Dr. Carolyn Tuella announced the 10-year accreditation of the Baccalaureate Nursing Program by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a nationally recognized accrediting body for baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing programs.
