BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE STUDENT AWARDED NEW JERSEY NETS SCHOLARSHIP

April 2, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College freshman Vicnell Marichal of Paterson was recently named a recipient of a $4,000 scholarship paid over four years from the New Jersey Nets Foundation through the Community Youth Organization. Bloomfield College will match the scholarship and will provide a mentor to Marichal as part of the program.

The presentation was made at halftime of Nets’ home game on March 28 against the Denver Nuggets. Scholarship recipients are selected based on several factors including financial need, a history of community service, and grade point average.

Marichal is a graduate of Paterson Catholic Regional High School, where he received awards for history and algebra. As a member of the baseball team, he was named All-County and All-State for his junior and senior seasons. He was named to the All-Area and All-League teams for baseball for three consecutive years. Marichal joined the Bloomfield College baseball team this spring as an infielder and pitcher.

Marichal was also active with the Latin Dance Club and his high school yearbook committee. He held a part-time job in high school and also volunteered at the Kessler Institute, where he helped the elderly around the facilities, assisted with meals, and provided friendship. “I decided to give back to my community just because I thought it was the right thing to do,” said Marichal, who is planning to major in Computer Information Systems.

“We are grateful to the New Jersey Nets and the Community Youth Organization for their support, and are delighted to be a part of this scholarship program,” said Bloomfield College President John F. Noonan. “We are fortunate to have partners who believe in this institution and are committed to making the educational dreams of our students a reality.”
