GLEN RIDGE RESIDENT TO DELIVER SENIOR ADDRESS AT COMMENCEMENT

May 17, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ - Denise Wegel of Glen Ridge is a working mother, a community leader, a homemaker, a professional musician, a mentor and tutor, and an honors student in the nursing program at Bloomfield College. On Thursday, May 24, she will add the title of “senior speaker” to her impressive array of accomplishments as she addresses her classmates at Bloomfield College’s 128th Commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on the college quadrangle. She will be the first Bloomfield College nursing student ever to deliver the senior address.

For the past 10 years, Wegel has volunteered with the Center for Hospice Care, Inc. in Millburn. She has served on the board of directors for the American Red Cross - Glen Ridge for the past six years, and is also active with Senior Care of Montclair.

Wegel has been dedicated to service since she was very young. She says she doesn’t remember anyone teaching her this; she just had an intuitive desire to help others. Not surprisingly, her example seems to have had a positive effect on both her children; 15-year old Allana and 20-year old Eric are both involved in community service as well.

On campus, she serves as a mentor and tutor to other nursing students, and is president of the Bloomfield College Student Nursing Association. She received a Bloomfield College Service Award as well as a Deans’ Scholarship Award for her academic excellence and community service. For the past two years, she has been included in Who’s Who Among College Students in American Universities and Colleges.
