The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award was created by the Purchasing Management Association of New York in 1931, and is presented to those individuals whose modest, unselfish, sincere, and persistent efforts have aided in the advancement of the supply and material management field. The J. Shipman Award honors those who assist and guide members of the supply and material management profession in their endeavors.

Clayton joined the Bloomfield College faculty in 1988. He has been active in the profession since 1956, and over the past 45 years has made innumerable contributions to the profession, to NAPM, and to Bloomfield College’s Materials Management Institute.

Clayton has supported and promoted minority and women owned business by developing and presenting “How to do Business With Big Business,” a program directed at the Minority Purchasing Council, the Women’s Business Owner’s Association and many small businesses.

On the national level, Clayton served as a member of the J. Shipman Award Committee, the Organization and Planning Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Executive Committee for NAPM. He instructs C.P.M. review courses and has presented at the NAPM International Conference on four separate occasions. Clayton has prepared a 10-session college level course entitled “Purchasing-Pipeline to Corporate Profit” for NAPM which was previewed at the 2000 International Conference and is designed to be used as an online program.

At Bloomfield College, Clayton has played a leadership role in designing the Materials Management Institute (MMI), one of the nation’s few professional certificate programs in the field of materials management that holds classes both on campus and on-site at the company workplace. With Clayton’s guidance, Bloomfield became the only college in New Jersey to offer a Certificate in Materials and Supply Management as well as a B.S. degree in business with a concentration in materials management.

Throughout the years, major companies such as AlliedSignal Inc., Datascope, Engelhard Corp., Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corp., Schering-Plough, PSE&G, and others have welcomed Bloomfield College faculty to hold MMI classes on-site while more than 100 New Jersey companies, including Hoffmann-LaRoche and Royal Doulton, have sent individual employees to the Bloomfield College campus to enroll in classes.
