COLLEGE DONATES BOOKS TO LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA

August 24, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- The Center for Academic Development at Bloomfield College recently donated more than 160 Language Arts books and 75 English As A Second Language (ESL) textbooks to the Literacy Volunteers of America in Bridgewater, New Jersey. The project was organized by Diana Blauvelt, a Reading Specialist at Bloomfield College.

Most of the donated books were written for remedial composition and reading classes. According to Catherine Mitch, Director of Field Services for Literacy Volunteers of America - New Jersey, the textbooks are useful resources for tutors who need guidance on creating lessons to help students with reading comprehension and writing skills.

“Our tutors can apply the techniques they see in these texts to real life and fit their students’ goals and level,” she said.

The Bloomfield College Center for Academic Development provides Bloomfield College students with a wide variety of support services designed to improve academic achievement. The Center regularly offers placement testing, tutoring programs, workshops, study groups, and professional exam preparation.
