SENATOR CORZINE TO SPEAK AT BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE CONVOCATION

August 28, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ - Senator Jon S. Corzine will deliver the Convocation address as Bloomfield College celebrates the beginning of the academic year on Monday, September 17 at 2:15 p.m. in the Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre in the College’s Westminster Arts Center.

“We are delighted to have Senator Corzine speak with the College community as we explore this year’s academic theme, Journeys: Within & Beyond,” said Bloomfield College President John F. Noonan. “I am sure the College community will enjoy hearing about Senator Corzine’s personal journey from his childhood days on a small family farm in Illinois to his leadership in corporate America and public service.”

Jon Corzine was elected to his first term in the United States Senate in November 2000, after a long and successful career as an investment banker. The former co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs, Senator Corzine ran for public office on a platform that called for a greater federal role in health care and education, and demanded a strong federal commitment to equal rights and equal opportunities.

He was named a partner at Goldman Sachs in 1980 and became chairman and chief executive officer in 1994, eventually transforming the firm from a private partnership to a public company.

During Senator Corzine’s leadership at the firm, Fortune magazine named Goldman Sachs one of the 10 best companies in America. In 1997, Time magazine named the Senator one of the top 50 technology executives in the country. Also that year, President

Clinton appointed Senator Corzine the chairman of a presidential commission to study capital budgeting as a means of increasing federal investment in technology, infrastructure and schools.

Senator Corzine has been personally involved in a number of community and philanthropic programs in his hometown of Summit, NJ. He co-chaired the area YMCA Second Century Campaign, which helped rebuild Summit’s Y. He also served as a director of Family Services of Summit and was a member of the fund-raising board of Overlook Hospital. Through personal contributions, he helped sponsor 10 inner city parochial schools in New York and New Jersey.

He is a member of the boards of trustees of New York University’s Child Study Center, the University of Chicago, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Senator Corzine is a member of several government committees: Joint Economic; Environment and Public Works; Budget; and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and received his MBA from the University of Chicago.
