COLLEGE ART STUDENTS CONSTRUCT WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL ON QUAD

September 21, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College students, under the guidance of faculty members Elizabeth Seaton and Beverly O’Mara, recently installed a Twin Towers memorial on the College quadrangle as a joint project of their “Intro to Visual Art” and “Arts Alive” classes.

Each tower stands about 10 feet high and is constructed with branches and chicken wire. Students, faculty, staff, and neighbors from the community are invited to add to the memorial. Strips of fabric and markers are available at the site to record personal messages that can then be tied or woven into the frame.

A foil-covered surface is also provided for candles. Participants are encouraged to use votive candles in jars and to please keep safety in mind.

“This terrible event is making it clear how much we value each individual person in this shared community,” said Seaton.

Personal counselors, faculty and staff have been assisting students in gaining information about, and understanding the crisis. The College has held services to remember the victims of the attack, and several organizations on campus have organized drives to collect clothing, donate blood and supply relief to the victims’ families. The College is also providing a self-expression board in the College Center on which individuals may draw or write about the tragic events.

“Bloomfield College is committed to helping our community and assisting local relief organizations wherever and whenever possible. In these confusing times, our priority must be to help each other to work through the pain and disbelief these acts are causing,” said Bloomfield College President John F. Noonan.
