BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE CAPTURES LEES MCRAE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

October 1, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- The Bloomfield College women’s volleyball team defeated King College (Tennessee), 30-23, 25-30, 30-28, 30-18, to capture first place in the Lees-McRae Invitational Tournament in North Carolina on September 29. King College had been ranked in the NAIA Top 25 earlier in the season.

After an opening round loss to King College, Bloomfield (8-3) advanced to the finals with a convincing 30-26, 30-18, 30-22 win over Gardner Webb University (North Carolina) and a 30-18, 30-28, 30-20 victory over Lees-McRae College (North Carolina).

Outside hitters Eduarda Modaneze and Silvia Lopes both had 23 kills and 26 digs for Bloomfield in the championship game. Modaneze, a junior from Brazil, was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Bloomfield setter Monica Fernandez and middle blocker Cintia Spaniol.

Eduarda Modaneze was also named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Volleyball Player of the Week for week 4. She led the team in kills in four of the five tournament matches, and has a .286 hitting percentage with 78 kills so far this season.

“The team looked good. We’re starting to play real volleyball now,” said Bloomfield head coach Tony Fontanelle.

The Bloomfield College women’s volleyball team compiled a 24-8 record and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history last season.
