Area Artists Participate In Bloomfield College Exhibition
Thirteen artists living and/or working in Bloomfield will present their work in “Journeys: Within and Beyond,” a visual arts exhibit on view November 26 through January 10 at the Westminster Art Gallery in Bloomfield College’s Westminster Arts Center, corner of Franklin and Fremont Streets in Bloomfield, New Jersey. An opening reception will be held on Monday, November 26 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Curator Lois Farina Reilly, Bloomfield College staff member and student, has labeled the show first in a series to highlight the work of Bloomfield’s artists. Reilly and Gallery Director David Rosenak wish to bring attention to the thriving colony of artists living and/or working in the township. Many of the participating artists are well known locally, nationally, and in some cases, internationally, and have exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. Included in the exhibit are works of oil on canvas, sculptural mixed media, encaustic, oil pastel, and wood.
Echoing the current Bloomfield College academic theme of exploration, each of the exhibition’s 13 artists expresses their own unique journey through their art. Janet Filomeno interprets the “fragility of life and the emotional impact this has on us all,” while Philemona Williamson illustrates “the conflicts of gender identity as assigned by the outside as opposed to the inner identity.” Carole Alter’s journey is unplanned; she goes “where the paper and materials lead me, to find the painting hidden in the paper and to do it.” Joseph Siciliano expresses his “love for primitive and tribal art” in furniture that is both functional and decorative.
Alyce Gottesman, Jason Hunsinger, Deborrah Markette, Keely McCool, Vivian McDuffie, Barbara Siciliano, Charles Song, and Pamela Wye complete the list of artists.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by appointment. There will be a holiday open house on Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 from noon to 4 p.m. For more information call 973-748-9000, x 343 or x294.
