BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR WINS BROOKLYN ARTS EXCHANGE AWARD

November 8, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- Hank Smith, an adjunct faculty member in the Division of Creative Arts & Technology at Bloomfield College, was one of six individuals to receive a BAXten Arts And Artists In Progress Award presented by the Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

Smith, an interdisciplinary performance artist and director/choreographer with a background in television production, was honored in the “Artists, Arts Education, and Arts Management” category.

Using his skills as a dancer, mime, clown and actor, Smith explores aspects of human relationships. His work promoting the arts of tap dance earned him an Ethnic Dance Award and in 1998 he hosted six evenings of performance and conversation with master tap dancers called “The Story of Tap,” commissioned by Dixon Place.

For 20 years, he worked with Sesame Street. In addition to teaching at Bloomfield College, he serves on the faculty of LaGuardia Community College, where he teaches communication, TV/video production, and performance. He also teaches the arts as part of the “Elder Shares the Arts” program at the MCA High School in Brooklyn.

Smith is currently working on a video profiling the tap master James “Buster” Brown.
