COLLEGE TO OFFER TUITION-FREE HUMANITIES COURSE

Martin Kellman

November 9, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ - Bloomfield College is still accepting applications for the Kellman Course in the Humanities, an introductory humanities course for mature students who need to try their first college course close to home. Students who qualify and are accepted into the course receive one year of free college-level instruction in disciplines including American history, moral philosophy, art history, literature, and critical thinking and writing.

Bloomfield College was selected as one of five institutions across the country to offer this course, which is modeled on the Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities. The course is designed to create a bridge to higher education for non-traditional students, promote intellectual development, and prepare students for fuller participation in the economic and political life of society.

The Kellman Course in the Humanities will be offered two evenings a week at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark, from December through May. Tuition, books, child care and transportation are provided by philanthropic and governmental organizations.

The course will be taught by Bloomfield College faculty members including Robert Deischer, Lecturer in English and Fine & Performing Arts; Lisa Rabinowitz, Professor of Fine Arts; Thomas Slaughter, Professor of Philosophy; and Sandra Van Dyk, Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies.

Students who complete the course will earn college credits and a certificate of achievement for their participation. Of the 514 students who have enrolled in the Bard College Clemente Course since its inception, 240 have earned college credit and 203 students have gone on to attend college or plan to do so in the near future.

The program is geared towards non-traditional age students, working adults, and educationally and economically disadvantaged students. Those interested in applying for the course must have a sixth-grade reading level or better and must complete an application and a personal interview. For application information, please contact Cheryl Evans, Program Director, at (973) 748-9000 ext. 106. The application deadline is Wednesday, November 21st.

The Bloomfield College Kellman Course in the Humanities is named in memory of Martin Kellman, the College’s beloved professor of English who died in 1999. The course is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). Other participating institutions include Reed College in Oregon, Trinity College in Connecticut, Northeastern College in Massachusetts, and the University of Alaska at Anchorage.
