November 9, 2001, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College will host a
screening of Gaza Strip, a new documentary film by James Longley on
Monday, November 19 at 2 p.m. in the Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre on campus. The
theatre is located in the Westminster Arts Center, on the corner of Franklin and
Fremont Streets in Bloomfield.
Gaza Strip, James Longley’s first feature documentary, was produced on location in Palestine during the spring of 2001. The film follows a range of characters and events, with “slices of life” in different cities and towns inside the Gaza Strip. |
The film begins in Gaza City, following the inner and outer lives of a 13-year-old boy, a self-styled revolutionary, as he struggles to find meaning in his life while his friends are killed around him, one by one.
Gaza Strip aspires to the most basic aim of documentary film: to fix reality in an unblinking, thought-provoking way, and to create a document of time and place that would otherwise never be recorded.
The video version to be shown at Bloomfield College is 55 minutes long, and is a preview of the 90-minute final cut version which is in post-production and will be ready in December.
The director, James Longley, received a film education at the University of Rochester and Wesleyan University. He received the Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his short documentary, “Portrait of Boy with Dog,” about a boy in a Moscow orphanage.
On Tuesday, November 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Westminster Hall Art Gallery, the
College will host a “teach-in” about the war in Afghanistan. The event, led by five faculty members, is designed to provide a context for today’s events by offering background about the history, religion and politics of the region.
Panelists include Bloomfield College Professor of History Steve Golin, Associate Professor of Sociology Esmail Bagheri-Najmi, Assistant Professor of Public Administration Glenda Kirkland, and Assistant Professor of Psychology Rashmi Jaipal, as well as Steve Shalom, Professor of Political Science at William Paterson University.
Westminster Hall is located on the corner of Fremont Street and Austin Place in Bloomfield.
