Speech delivered by Bloomfield College President John F. Noonan
September 11, 2002

We met here in this place a year ago, turning to God and to each other: where else could we turn? Some of you prayed for loved ones whom you feared were lost 20 miles away.

Everywhere in this country this morning, and in many places around the world, men and women are meeting again, turning to God and to each other. The meanings of 9/11 are too dense, too sobering to be deciphered alone.

We have at this college what we need to find meaning in this dark anniversary. We have our experience in the past year; we have a vibrant staff, faculty and student body; we have a library; we have the Internet; we have the resources of this day dedicated to “building one world.” And we have each other.

In just a moment, bells will ring. Listen silently to them and to the inaudible sounds of others, millions of others, who are straining to catch the meaning of September 11.
