BASKETBALL TEAM COMPETES IN 5K RUN FOR ARC
April 10, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Members of the Bloomfield College men’s basketball team traded their basketball sneakers for running shoes on Saturday, April 6 as they competed in the Building Tomorrows 5K Run to benefit The ARC of Essex County.
Nearly 300 runners competed in the race, which was held at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield.
“It was a lot of fun. It was a great way for the team to pull together and support an important cause,” said head coach Jack Sullivan.
The ARC of Essex County, which is based in Livingston, enables those who have mental retardation to realize individual goals and to learn, work, play, and coexist with dignity and full partnership in the community. The ARC provides direct service to those with developmental disabilities and their families and acts as an advocate by advancing their interests. The organization is also committed to reducing the incidence of mental retardation through education and public information.
Participants from the Bloomfield College men’s basketball team included: Kyle Blue, Jason Brooks, Ray Brown, Alwin Dickson, Herbie Hall, Norman Ingram, Amil Mitchell, Michael Pineiro, Dwayne Thomas, Rafiq White, Andrew Whitmore, and coach Jack Sullivan.
Alwin Dickson was the Deacons’ first finisher, crossing the line at 22:13 to take first place in the 15 to 19 age category. Ray Brown placed second in the 20 to 24 age group, finishing the race in 23:38.
