PIERFY HONORED BY ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY

May 2, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds Arthur Pierfy received a 2002 United States EPA Environmental Quality Award on April 30 in New York City. The Environmental Quality Award is the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA.

Bloomfield College was also given special recognition as part of Pierfy’s award. The award is given to those who have demonstrated “an outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality in our region.”

According to Regional Administrator Jane M. Kenny, “As Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Bloomfield College and Secretary of the New Jersey Association of Designated Persons, Arthur Pierfy has been a strong and effective advocate for school-based environmental issues. He gave invaluable assistance to the outreach effort among school personnel for implementing the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. He was also one of the first school facility directors to realize the importance of addressing indoor environmental issues.”

Speaking in various venues, Pierfy has used his experience to convince other school personnel across New Jersey of the feasibility and necessity of implementing environmental measures, including the EPA’s Indoor Air Quality “Tools for Schools” program.  In addition to serving as Bloomfield College’s Superintendent of Buildings & Grounds, Pierfy also serves as Environmental, Health & Safety Manager, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
