SHUMPERT NAMED BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE CHAPLAIN

May 8, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Reverend Todd Shumpert of Newark, NJ, recently joined Bloomfield College as full-time chaplain.

Ordained in 1998, Rev. Shumpert has served two Presbyterian congregations as Minister of Word and Sacrament: the Fort Valley Presbyterian Church of Fort Valley, Georgia, where he was Pastor; and the First Presbyterian Church of Northport, New York, where he was Associate Pastor.

Rev. Shumpert, a native of Smyrna, Georgia, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. In college, he studied music and drama and performed in several plays and musicals including Cabaret, Oklahoma, Kiss Me Kate, Stage Door, Our Town, Fiddler On The Roof, and Brigadoon.

Rev. Shumpert received the Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, a seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

“My main goals are to strengthen the ties between Bloomfield College and the Presbyterian Church, and to encourage an atmosphere on campus where interfaith dialogue can take place,” said Rev. Shumpert. “As a part of the Wellness Center on campus, I’m also interested in encouraging the development of the whole student - mind, body and spirit.”

He is currently working with staff, faculty and students to develop a program of religious life on campus that will include interfaith fellowship and dialogue, informal prayer and gatherings, service to the community, and opportunities to put beliefs into action.

Founded in 1868 as a Presbyterian seminary, Bloomfield College today is an independent, four-year, co-educational institution offering programs in the liberal arts and pre-professional studies. Bloomfield College is the only Presbyterian-related college in the Synod of the Northeast. The College’s mission is to prepare students to achieve academic, personal and professional success in a multicultural and global society.
