BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE STUDENT SELECTED FOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

June 19, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ - Bloomfield College junior Erica Chavez of Passaic has been selected to participate in the Hispanic Interns in Community Service/ Latino Leaders Fellowship Institute this summer.

Chavez is an EOF student majoring in Criminal Justice. She was one of 32 students chosen to participate in this Hispanic Interns program from colleges all over New Jersey. Once a week, Chavez has training in Trenton, while she works as an intern in a community service organization in Newark, New Jersey.

“This is a phenomenal program, and I believe she’ll be quiet successful,” said Anna Marie Tutiven of Career Services at Bloomfield College.

The main goal of this program is to motivate and expose Latino college students to career opportunities in state government and public service. In addition to policy-making, students will be networking with administrators, legislators, and other student representatives from colleges all over the state. This institute is also designed to strengthen professional and leadership skills though hands-on training. Assistance is provided to eligible state, local, non-profit agencies, and private sector partners willing to sponsor a summer internship.

Students receive a stipend funded by state appropriation, grants-in-aid, and private funding.

The program is from June 3 to August 9, when students will participate in a graduation ceremony and receive certificates of completion.
