A Transylvanian July Series in the Westminster Art Gallery

June 25, 2002 Bloomfield, NJ - Bloomfield College proudly presents “A Transylvanian July Series,” a cultural event combining color photography, storytelling, video, workshops, and dramatic readings by Artist-in-Residence Ella Veres, July 1-31 in the Westminster Art Gallery, Westminster Arts Center, corner of Franklin and Fremont Streets, Bloomfield. There will be a public opening reception Wednesday, July 10th from 6-8 p.m.

“This is an opportunity for Bloomfield College to reach out to members of our community from Eastern Europe and an opportunity for us to broaden our students’ understanding of diversity,“ said David Rosenak, the College’s Director of Arts Education. “We are excited that this exhibit brings with it several opportunities for public gatherings.”

The event is comprised of seven segments, each examining a different theme related to the people of Transylvania. Beginning with the July 10th reception, “Farewell, My Transylvania!,” the additional programs are as follows: Monday, July 15th, “Dear Dracula, Fangs to You!” Fiction and History; Wednesday, July 17th, “Hungarians & Romanians: “The Unhappy Family of Political Geography;” Monday, July 22, “The Gypsy Story: “Thieves, Witches, and Belly Dancers, Of Course;” Wednesday, July 24, “A Humorous Memoir: “Growing Down Under Communism;” Monday, July 29, “How I Wore Out Fifty Pairs of Silk Stockings,” a dramatic reading; and Wednesday, July 31, a storytelling workshop, at which Veres will demonstrate to the audience how to write and perform their own story.

“I started to work on this show in 2000,” said Veres. “I went back home to take pictures of the people of Transylvania-people wanted to know about Transylvania-it’s not about vampires. The vampire is part of Transylvanian folklore and superstitions. Fiction shapes reality. The country, which is very poor, has been exploited for this vampire legend.”

In her show, Veres will present movie clips, perform stories, show her photography, and yes, she will also talk about vampires. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by appointment. For more information about the exhibit, please call the Art Gallery at 973-748-9000, ext. 129 or 279. Recommended contribution is $5.
