SCHOLARS GRADUATE FROM KELLMAN COURSE

July 8, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Seventeen scholars completed the inaugural Kellman Course in the Humanities this year, and participated in a very emotional closing ceremony at the Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre on July 1.

The Bloomfield College Kellman Course in the Humanities brings free college-level classes to a dedicated group of adult students twice a week. The classes are held at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark.

The 2001 Kellman graduates were: Dorothy Edmund of Maplewood, Grace Gibson-Evans of Maplewood, Betty Foye of Newark, Saleenah Greenlee of Newark, Lillie Johnson of Newark, Evelyn Harris of Newark, Jose Henriquez of Belleville, Safronia Lampley of Orange, Greatha Lindo of East Orange, Alice Person of Newark, Eleanor Rowe of Newark, Delores Saunders of Maplewood, Ilsa Scholz of Belleville, Beverly Smith of East Orange, Marcine Strand of East Orange, Todd Swindell of Newark, and Richard Welch of Newark.

Students Delores Saunders of Maplewood and Ilsa Scholz of Belleville were named the first recipients of the Martin Kellman Memorial Scholarship, which will help them continue towards their dream of a college degree.

The course was taught by Bloomfield College professors Bob Deischer, Lisa Rabinowitz, Tom Slaughter, and Sandy Van Dyk under the direction of Dr. Cheryl Evans.Modeled after the Bard Course in the Humanities, the Kellman Course is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) and is named for Martin Kellman, the College’s beloved professor of English who died in 1999.
