BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE STUDENT WINS KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP

August 15, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College sophomore Andre Gibbions of Newark became the 18-29 year old Beginners United States Capitol Classics Heavyweight Sparring Karate Champion on August 10 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C.

Gibbions, 18, began participating in the sport only seven months ago, and this was his first karate tournament. At 170 pounds, he competed with opponents who were taller, heavier and older than he was. In fact, Gibbions was technically the smallest competitor in the heavyweight category.

“I really surprised myself,” said Gibbions, who defeated an opponent from Canada to take the title.

Gibbions, who trains at the Traditional Shotokan Karate Institute in Maplewood, also took home a plaque for being a finalist in men’s form.

He is a Creative Arts & Technology (CAT) major at Bloomfield College and works part-time in the Office of Athletics. In the winter, Gibbions serves as student manager for the men’s basketball team.
