October 29, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- In the fall of 1977 the new conductor of the Bloomfield College Choir, Dr. Byerte Johnson ’77, gave a rehearsal call to faculty and staff to join the choir in the presentation of Handel’s “Messiah.” The first two people to respond were Professor Frances McLaughlin N’45, the then chair of the Presbyterian Division of Nursing; and Shirley Alino N’57, professor of nursing. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the “Messiah” presentation. Dr. McLaughlin will again sing “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion,” followed by the 70-voice chorus. Many of these chorus members are former Bloomfield College chorus members. Shirley Alino is now business manager of the choir, which has become the Baroque Chorale. Dr. Johnson, now Director of Fine and Performing Arts at the JAMAS Children’s University, will conduct the “Messiah.” The 25th anniversary presentation of the “Messiah” will be Sunday, December 1st at 6 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Bloomfield Center. |
