DAVIS AWARDED THE ALICE W. PRICE SCHOLARSHIP

October 29, 2002, Bloomfield, NJ -- Bloomfield College student Vernesa Davis, an English Writing major from Newark, has been selected as the 2002-2003 recipient of the Alice W. Price Endowed Scholarship.

The $500 award is presented annually to students who “demonstrate improvement and excellence in written and oral communication, including speaking skills and proper use of English grammar.”

“It’s a great feeling to know that I had the potential to receive such an award that will further my academic excellence,” said Davis. “Also, it’s wonderful to know that someone was willing to help me with financial support.”

As a sophomore, Davis works hard academically while also supporting an 18-month old daughter. After college, she plans to become an elementary school teacher.

Alice W. Price is a Montclair resident and a Trustee Emerita of Bloomfield College. She initiated the scholarship to “provide a monetary award as an incentive towards the command of the English language, a behavior change which is the mark of a truly educated person.”

The award illustrates a passionate commitment to the community which characterizes Price’s professional and personal life. A graduate of Bloomfield High School, Price received her bachelor’s degree in Community Nursing and her master’s degree in teaching and public health administration from New York University. She worked as a public health staff nurse and held various administrative positions at area nursing schools. In 1966 she joined Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc. as Manager of Nursing Services. During her 14-year tenure there, Price held several positions including educational director of Roche Communications. When she retired in 1980, she began her own consulting company, working with industry and volunteer organizations.

Among her many awards, Alice Price has received the Distinguished Service Award given by the Concerned Suburbia Committee, and Woman of Year Awards in health education from the YWCA of Montclair, the National Council of Negro Women, and the Essex County Urban League.

Alice Price served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Bloomfield College for 12 years and was appointed Trustee Emerita in 1993.

Founded in 1868 as a Presbyterian seminary, Bloomfield College has renewed itself to meet the changing needs of the community. The College has earned national recognition for its innovative, high-quality academic and co-curricular programs and for its commitment to serve students from all backgrounds, particularly those who have traditionally been excluded from higher education. Its mission is to prepare students to attain academic, personal and professional excellence in a multicultural and global society.
