The BS in Allied Health Technologies is for students who are strong in science, and wish to be highly trained professionals with significant patient contact, without the years of schooling, as well as the very high cost of medical school. The job opportunities for graduates in these concentrations are excellent, with anticipation of even further growth.

As noted before, Bloomfield College has an articulation agreement with UMDNJ for the concentrations listed below. Successful candidates have completed three years at Bloomfield College (for the basic sciences and general education requirements), followed by fifteen months at UMDNJ for the clinical/professional requirements. As indicated in this agreement, students need to maintain a GPA of at least 2.75 to be considered competitive. However, prospective students need to know that the UMDNJ portion of these programs has a limited number of seats available and hence students are evaluated based upon their academic credentials. Students are also encouraged to build a strong relationship with the program coordinator in order to learn more about these programs.

Most importantly, before committing to one of the tracks below, as well as to this major, students are strongly encouraged to visit UMDNJ’s web site for links to the brochures for each of the programs below. Just a quick connection to the program of interest will put the student into the web pages describing the clinical portions of this very interesting career path in more detail. The best way for a student to decide what he/she wants to do in this area is to read the descriptions of the courses to be taken at UMDNJ, after completing the basic sciences at Bloomfield College.

Assisted by their advisor, students can select one of the four specializations briefly described below. Please note that the basic science/gen ed requirements for the BS-AHT degree are the same, regardless of the concentration/specialization. The specialization is done at UMDNJ, following application to UMDNJ’s part of the program. Therefore it is strongly recommended that all prospective students look at UMDNJ’s program site before committing to this very challenging major. The possible concentrations (whose professional/clinical requirements are completed at UMDNJ) are:

Diagnostic Medical Sonography
The sonographer works closely with the physician to provide information critical for diagnosis with the utilization of ultrasound, a non-invasive analytical method.

Respiratory Care
Respiratory therapists assist in the diagnosis, treatment, management, education, and preventive care of patients with disorders of the cardiopulmonary system (heart/lung problems). These professionals utilize a variety of methods, from drugs to devices, in order to enhance the quality of care for their patients. Respiratory Therapists are employed by hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, as well as the pharmaceutical industry.

Nuclear Medicine Technology
This specialty utilizes radioactive materials in application to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. A rapidly growing field, it takes advantage of technology, as well as science, in the solving/treating of medical disorders. Nuclear Medicine Technologists work hand-in-hand with physicians in treating and educating patients with regard to treatment, as well as prognosis. Students interested in this highly competitive and lucrative field have to be comfortable with dealing with radiochemicals, of course with appropriate training and protection.

Vascular Technology
Vascular diseases involve problems associated with blood flow. Although these disorders primarily affect the elderly, in today’s society, increasingly younger populations are being affected. Current problems include, but are not limited to, problems associated with stroke, renal failure, amputation, gangrene and aortic aneurysms. Ultrasound is the non-invasive method used for diagnose such problems.
