BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE (BS-CLS)
This is an exciting career path for students interested in guaranteed employment in a hospital or industrial laboratory environment. Successful graduates will have completed three years at Bloomfield College (for prerequisites and general education courses) and approximately fifteen months (for professional and clinical components) at UMDNJ. This program produces highly trained professionals, immediately ready to enter the workforce. With the assistance of their advisor, students can choose from three concentrations

Medical Technology
Medical Technologists are laboratory scientists who play key roles in patient care by providing data that are critical for the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease. Seventy percent of a physician’s diagnosis is based upon the results provided by a Medical Technologist! Medical Technologists need to possess communication, problem solving, and organizational skills. They also need to be interested in working with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Medical Technologists are also highly demanded by the pharmaceutical industry, since they are very well trained professionals with strong critical thinking and hands-on skills.

Cytotechnology
Cytotechnologists examine cells removed from all body tissues and organs to determine whether or not cancer is present. Cytotechnologists work closely with pathologists to detect and interpret microscopic abnormalities. The typical cytotechnologist must truly enjoy working behind a microscope. Because of the strain associated with looking through a microscope for many hours a day, cytotechnologists are among the most highly paid of the CLS professionals.
