The Department of Chemistry offers programs leading to a BS degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry. In addition, interested individuals can also obtain a minor in Chemistry. These degrees are designed for preparing undergraduate students for graduate studies in chemistry or related fields, careers in teaching, industry, medicine, dentistry, law (at Seton Hall University or at Rutgers), and other professional disciplines. The curriculum includes a rigorous study of the laws, principles, and theories applied in the various branches of Chemistry. The curriculum also supports the development of laboratory skills in methods of analysis, synthesis, and instrumentation. Record keeping is emphasized.
The minor in Chemistry is designed for individuals interested in augmenting other degrees with chemistry courses.
Bloomfield College is small enough and flexible enough to allow an interested individual many options as far as curriculum design is concerned. This is the place to come to if one is wishing to earn a degree, to pick up courses for a major, pick up the prerequisites for a professional track, or to resume work on an abandoned degree in the sciences. Bloomfield’s most desirable asset is that all courses required as a part of the chemistry and Biochemistry concentrations are regularly offered at night, guaranteeing the interested student an opportunity to complete the program on a part-time basis

Recently, because of purchases and the awarding of several (NSF) grants, Bloomfield College has acquired a number of instruments that are being used in upper level majors’ courses. These include a Perkin-Elmer FT Infrared spectrophotometer, a Shimadzu UV-Vis scanning spectrophotometer, a Hitachi 60 MHz Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer, a Varian HPLC unit, and an FID gas chromatography unit.

The Department also has a thermal conductivity gas chromatograph and an atomic absorption unit available for instruction.

Bloomfield College’s small size, together with all courses, especially the upper level courses, being taught by full-time faculty, permits individualized students’ experience on these instruments.

IN SUMMARY:
