It is extremely difficult to gain admission to medical (allopathic and osteopathic), pharmacy, dental, veterinary, physician assistant, physical therapy, law and related schools. Competition is fierce and requirements are not necessarily clearly indicated. Timelines are especially important.

In order to know everything and anything necessary for successful admission to these professions, it is imperative that the student contacts the Pre-professional Coordinator at the College, Dr. Maria Vogt. She can be found in the Science Building, Room 226. The best way to reach her is by email. Her email address is maria_vogt@bloomfield.edu

It is strongly recommended that interested students search the Internet to learn more about these programs for themselves. One of the most useful general sites is that put out by the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. Their web site will take you to a network of other, very informative locations.

Bloomfield College is small enough and flexible enough to allow an interested individual many options as far as curriculum design is concerned. This is the place to come to if one is wishing to earn a degree, to pick up courses for a major, pick up the prerequisites for a professional track, or to resume work on an abandoned degree in the sciences. Bloomfield’s most desirable asset is that all courses required as a part of the chemistry and Biochemistry concentrations are regularly offered at night, guaranteeing the interested student an opportunity to complete the program on a part-time basis

A good place to learn even more about medical school is to look at the web sites for the two allopathic medical schools in New Jersey (New Jersey Medical School in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway), as well as UMDNJ’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford.

A good place to learn more about dentistry is to search the web site of UMDNJ’s Dental School in Newark. Nearby pharmacy schools are at Rutgers (New Brunswick) and Long Island University (New York). One nearby veterinary school is at Cornell University (New York).

Finally, a ton of general information about all of the post-baccalaureate programs out there can be obtained by surfing through THE graduate schools web site! This site contains information about both graduate programs (MS, PhD, etc.) and professional schools (MD, DO, etc.)
The requirements for admission to all of these professional programs can vary considerably. Students can major in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or any other discipline. In most cases, the minimum science requirements include one year of biology, one year of physics and two years of chemistry, with grades of B or better. Students are encouraged to achieve grade point averages of 3.0 or higher both in the sciences as well as overall. In many cases, national, standardized exams must be taken prior to being considered a candidate for the professional school.
Over the years, Bloomfield College students have been able to gain admission into all of these programs. Building a close relationship with the Pre-professional Coordinator is the first step to success
