The Department of Public Safety provides an orientation for the Residence Life Staff every August during training for Resident Advisors. This session is conducted by the Director of Public Safety. Topics covered include safety procedures, security guard rotations, emergency/crisis chain of command.

The Department of Public Safety in collaboration with Residence Life Office also provides training for the Residence Hall monitors. The monitors are extensions of both the Department of Public Safety and the Residence Life staff with respect to enforcing the visitation procedures and monitoring the flow of guests to Clee and Schweitzer Halls.

During the months of November and April the Department of Public Safety in collaboration with the Physical Plant Department holds a Crime Awareness and Prevention Day (CAPD) on campus. CAPD is comprised of several different sessions/workshops designed to inform students and employees about:

  • crime prevention
  • campus security procedures
  • promote the awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, and other forcible and non-forcible offenses
  • crisis prevention and intervention
  • personal and property safety
  • fire prevention
  • alcohol and drug awareness workshops

The individual sessions will be held more than one time during the day to give all faculty, staff and students an opportunity to attend. Advertisement of CAPD will be through:

  • direct mailing to students with their bills
  • e-mail to all staff, students and faculty
  • a flyer with the staff and faculty paychecks
  • mailing an advertisement to faculty and staff through the campus mail system
  • flyers posted on the residence halls, classroom facilities and library

In addition to CAPD other programs and talks are ongoing throughout the academic year. They are announced via flyers posted on campus, email announcements and articles in Bits ‘n’ Pieces, the weekly campus newsletter of events.
