The Women’s Studies Resource and Empowerment Center (WSREC)

The Women’s Studies Resource and Empowerment Center, otherwise known as the WSREC, is located on the second floor of the Student Center. The WSREC is home to Women’s Studies’ co-curricular activities, as well as to the Women’s Studies Library. We also house the Gay/Non-Gay Alliance and Sisters in Support (SIS), a student organization for women.

Every semester, we offer regularly scheduled co-curricular activities, as well as special events. With the exception of classes for which formal registration is required, all of our activities are open to every member of the campus community, including students, staff, and faculty. We invite you to participate.

Over the years, we have focused our special events on a variety of issues, including human trafficking, sexuality, and violence. In 2007, we immersed ourselves in the issue of human trafficking. We invited experts to speak on the topic:

  • Stacy Hanrahan, CND, volunteer at the United Nations
  • Eliza Fernbach, Artist-in-Residence at Bloomfield College
  • Cate Griebel, Safe Horizon Anti-Trafficking Program
  • Dina Yarmus, United Students Against Sweatshops
  • Professor Robert Ross, Clark University
  • Elissa Steglich, Managing Attorney, Immigrant Rights Program, American Friends Service Committee, Newark
From its inception to the present day, the Women’s Studies Program has sought to improve women’s lives here at the college. We have had a deep commitment to ending violence against women and educating the larger community in ways to do this. Over the years, we have sponsored several Clothesline Projects where women and men tell their stories or speak out about violence using a tee shirt as canvas. Through displays of these shirts on clotheslines (literally airing our painful secrets) throughout campus and providing opportunities for people to speak out about the violence in their own lives, we have raised awareness and provided support for change. One year, our efforts stretched across continents when we partnered with a group of women in the Mathare Valley in Kenya. http://users.bloomfield.edu/clubs/clotheslineproject/

We have also partnered with the Sisters in Support (a student women’s group on campus) to produce “The Vagina Monologues”, as part of the V-Day College Program, which has for over ten years, been dedicated to the goal of ending violence against women and girls worldwide. Students and faculty members have worked together to raise money and awareness through the performance of this altogether unique play.
